An observatory bell is an armoured piece of equipment installed on certain fortifications, from the end of the 19th century.

Initially reserved for the largest or most exposed forts, the observatory bell received its final improvements in the 1930s when it was adopted on the Maginot Line. It was available in two versions: the VP bell (periscopic view) and the VDP bell (direct and periscopic view), and was mainly used for distant vision, for adjusting the fire of the artillery blocks of the works.
