The trigger box, ancestor of the Flaman tachometer, was born in a context of shortage following the Second World War. When the first 141 R locomotives were delivered at the end of 1945, the exsangue French industry could not produce enough Flaman recorders, essential for monitoring train speed and safety. To remedy this absence, a temporary solution was developed: the trigger box.

This ingenious device was equipped with a whistle warning the mechanic when a closed signal was crossed, as well as a button allowing the acquittal and rearming of the system. The associated notice detailed its operation. Although designed as an alternative, this box was then used on manoeuvring locomotives that were not equipped with the Flaman system, thus extending its usefulness in railway history.
