The Livens gas projector was a World War I weapon designed by British engineer William Howard Livens. Used to launch toxic gas-filled projectiles on enemy lines, this device consisted of a large metal tube loaded with a mixture of compressed gas and an explosive. By triggering an explosion, he was propelling a gas-containing shell for several hundred metres. Although unclear, the Livens gas projector allowed for the saturation of a toxic gas area, causing massive losses in the enemy and preparing the ground for the assaults.
