The 58 mm mortar, nicknamed "crapuillot," was a trench weapon used by the French army during the First World War. The mortar, mainly designed for close shelling, fired low-trailer shells, ideal for reaching enemy trenches located at short distances. The "crapuillot" owed its nickname to its rough shape and its ability to produce a characteristic sound reminiscent of the toad's crust during shooting. Easy to manoeuvre and quick to deploy, he played a crucial role in the trench war, offering soldiers direct and effective artillery support against fortified opposing positions.
