Historical

The PT-109 was struck on August 2, 1943 at 2 a.m. by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri, and Kennedy, injured in the back during the collision, distinguished himself in rescuing his crew members, making them swim to Plum Pudding Island, an uninhabited island which has since been renamed Kennedy Island[1]. This feat of arms earned him the Navy and Marine Corps Medal; this episode was the subject of a propaganda film and was used to advantage during the electoral campaign in 1960.
